Ghandi (age 53) is the first resident of @elephant_haven_europe , a sanctuary in the south of France where former zoo and circus elephants can come to spend the rest of their life in a more ''Elephant'' kind of way.

A notebook contributed to a phenomenal being.

Around this time last year we were devastated with the news that Shirley passed away at age 72.

Shirley’s story is one that epitomises the fate of so many elephants in recent times.

At the age of five, she was taken from the Wild in Sumatra and sold to a Circus in the USA.
She suffered burns and lost most of her right ear , when the ship she was travelling in, caught fire and sank in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She survived a major road accident in Cuba and then the Circus was impounded by Castro during the Revolution , later to be released.

Then, Shirley was involved in a fight with another circus elephant and severely damaged her right leg , so that she could not continue to work.

She was sold to the Louisiana Purchase Zoo . However and unfortunately , she was the only elephant in the small Zoo and she lived alone for 22 years, with only her Keeper Solomon James, to keep her company.

Now we understand better the needs of elephants for social interaction , but for Shirley this was not possible.

Eventually, The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee came to Shirley’s rescue and brought her to freedom.

to see how she arrives with Solomon in Tennessee and to see the special relationship between them. He says that, ‘he doesn’t know who the first person was to put chains on Shirley, but he is mighty glad to be the last person to take them off’

When she arrived in the Sanctuary, Shirley immediately formed a very special bond with an elephant called Jenny. It seemed that they already knew each other : It was true – they did. Jenny had been part of the same circus 25 years ago and must have known Shirley as a kind of Mother figure then.

Shirley continued to live in the Sanctuary andhad big celebrations for her 70th Birthday.

All the near-death experiences make it an extraordinary story largely about survival and the will to move on, yes, even in animals.

Want to see exactly how our elephant dung paper is made? Swipe left!
First and most important step is to let the elephants roam around freely. Second step is to not cut down any trees. Equally important.
Then the process continues by collecting and cooking their dung to sterilize.
The pulp gets mixed with natural pigments and recycled paper from the previous batch and is then sifted and pressed, forming the thin sheets of paper.
The large sheets are hung to dry in the Sri Lankan sun until they are ready to be transformed into wonderful notebooks, frames, sketchbooks, cards,... by these lovely people!
